Born in Palma de Mallorca in 1949, Pep Canyelles developed an early interest in craftsmanship, working in his father’s workshop during his youth. His self-taught journey in art led him to explore painting through extensive reading on the subject. After a brief stay in Paris in the late 1960s, he settled in Barcelona but later returned to Mallorca to work in his father’s blacksmith shop.

In 1974, he joined Grupo Criada 74 (1974–1977), engaging in socio-cultural projects and showcasing his work in both solo and group exhibitions. His art has been featured in numerous editions of ARCO (the International Contemporary Art Fair in Madrid) and is displayed in institutional buildings in Palma de Mallorca. Canyelles has also created public sculptures that adorn prominent spaces throughout the Balearic Islands.
